Papal Music (IRE)

Papal Music is an athletic son of the tough and sound Hungerford Stakes (Group 2) winner Gregorian. Gregorian has made a decent start to his stud career from limited opportunities producing the likes of last year’s Criterium De Maisons-Laffitte (Group 2) winner Plainchant. Gregorian is by the excellent sire Clodovil, a stallion who has his own little fan club amongst breeders for consistently producing top class horses despite numbers being against him due to fertility issues. Clive Cox, our chosen trainer for this gelding, has tasted good success with this sireline courtesy of the Group winning pair of Beacon Lodge and Es Que Love.

The dam Kabaya is a granddaughter of the smart broodmare sire Verglas whilst she is herself a half-sister to the Prix D’Arenburg (Group 3) winner Yakaba who in turn has already produced this years’  Prix Du Calvados (Group 2)winner Accakaba. The grandam, Kayaba, also won at Stakes level and is out of half-sister to the Group 1 St James’ Palace winner Sendawar.

We purchased Papal Music for 18,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Somerville Sale in 2021. His trainer Clive Cox felt, like us, that he represented great value. We are greatly looking forward to seeing him debut early this year after a setback prevented him from making the track as a two year old.

I believe that Gregorian is such a stallion and I have been following his rising fortunes closely. This is a very well balanced horse with a great masculine expression. His value may have been helped by being Lot 3 early one morning. More importantly the beady eye of Clive Cox insisted we proceed to buy him. Afterwards when asked if he would prefer us to buy him a more valuable yearling he point blank refused , not wanting to swap him for anything.”
