Alaskan (GB)

We purchased Alaskan, a powerful son of Kodiac at the Goffs UK breeze-up sale for £58,000. Kodiac is one of the finest stallions in Europe, siring numerous fast and precocious horses such as Tiggy Wiggy, Campanelle and Ardad. He is renowned for producing tough and sound horses that ‘do what they say on the tin’!

The dam, Fixed Gaze, has produced three winners from four runners on the track to date and these include the colt’s talented full-sister, the Group 3-placed two-year-old, Fixette. Her own dam, Unique Pose, was Group placed herself and was a sister to the dam of the Group 1 Grand Prix De Paris winner Gallante.

He will be trained by Charlie Hills in Lambourn who often excels with fast horses such as the legendary Battaash and our own Group 2-winning sprinter Magical Memory. Let’s hope this colt joins the roll of honour in the years to come!

A wise and experienced American horseman once said to me : “ If you like a horse in the first ten lots in a sale , go ahead and buy it as it will always be good value in the prevailing market”. This piece of advice is fine , while not making any reference to budgetary constraints.

On this occasion our new boy by the mighty Kodiac was Lot 2 and while Sam and I were very keen on him, we frankly did not expect to be able to afford him. While an early number can obviously be disadvantageous to a seller, it can work in a buyers favour. His consignor Mick Murphy, one of the most respected of the Breeze Up clan, had recommended him and he was just the sort of horse that we were trying to find for Charlie Hills – a real sprinter to fit into the Farringdon Place home of speed. His new owners shouldn’t have to wait too long for their fun with him to begin.
